Language Teaching Policy

Objective: To enhance students' abilities and meet the needs of both students and society.

Learning non-language subjects in English

English is used as the medium of instruction in teaching Mathematics, Information Technology, Music, Visual Arts, Physical Education in all junior forms, Integrated Science in S1 and S2, as well as Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Business Fundamentals in S3. Starting from the academic year of 2026, S1 and S2 students also learn the subjects of Personal, Social and Humanities Education in English. As for senior form students can learn their DSE elective subjects in either English or Chinese as the medium of instruction according to their needs and abilities.

Laying a solid foundation of Cantonese and Putonghua

Since 2008, our school has participated in the "Scheme to Support Schools in Using Putonghua to Teach Chinese Language Subject". As of the current academic year of 2026-27, all S1 and S2 classes as well as half of the S3 classes have their Chinese Language lessons conducted in Putonghua, and starting from the next academic year (2027-28), Putonghua will be adopted as the medium of instruction in all junior form classes when teaching Chinese Language.

Small Class Teaching

For English, a school-based curriculum has been designed to cater to the diverse needs of our students. In all junior forms, classes weaker in English are split into smaller learning groups, hoping that diverse learning needs can be catered to. For senior forms, elite classes are conducted in S5 and S6 for tailor-made schemes of teaching and learning. For Chinese and Mathematics, split classes and smaller learning groups are arranged in S5 and S6 to better cater to students of different levels.

Enhancing different English skills

As of the academic year 2026-27, there is an English reading lesson in Secondary 1 and 2 hoping to cultivate students’ interest in reading English. There are also NET classes for all junior forms each year, allowing students to interact with native English speakers regularly, honing their listening and speaking skills. In senior forms, all S4 and S5 speaking lessons are conducted in split classes to facilitate their practice, and for S6 after-class speaking tutorials with the teacher-student ratio of 1:4 are arranged, ensuring adequate opportunities for students to practice speaking, getting better prepared for the public examinations.
