To celebrate the 80th anniversary of Heung To Middle School and broaden our students' global perspectives, our school successfully organized the "Tracing the Footsteps of the Silk Road: The Study Tour to Kazakhstan .

" Supported by the International Youth Exchange Programme of the Home and Youth Affairs Bureau, this tour was far more than a sightseeing trip; it was a rigorous, three-stage academic investigation into the "Belt and Road" initiative.

Phase 1: Pre-trip Preparation (Foundational Learning)

The preparation began three months prior to the departure. The participating students underwent intensive training, including Russian language lessons from professional tutors and lectures on Kazakh history and culture. Weekly meetings were held to establish five specific research frameworks, ensuring students entered the field with clear academic objectives.

Phase 2: Field Research (On-site Investigation)

During the five-day expedition (March 29 – April 2), the students conducted deep-dive investigations across five key disciplines:

  • History: Analyzing Almaty’s urban development, infrastructure, and heritage revitalization.
  • Geography: Studying eco-tourism at Charyn Canyon and Kolsai Lake to assess environmental conservation and government investment.
  • Culture: Observing nomadic traditions and language use (Kazakh/Russian) at the Green Bazaar.
  • Economy: Visiting the Astana Motors production line to examine the influence of "Made in China" brands on local lifestyles.
  • Diplomacy: Gaining firsthand insights into international relations at the Consulate-General of the People's Republic of China in Almaty.

A highlight of the trip was the cultural exchange at the Nazarbayev Intellectual Schools, where our students engaged directly with local peers, fostering international friendship.

Phase 3: Post-trip Consolidation (Knowledge Transfer)

Upon their return, the journey continued through analysis and reflection. Each group synthesized their findings into comprehensive reports, sharing their insights with teachers, students, and parents during a school-wide presentation. This rigorous process ensured that the experience was transformed from a simple journey into lasting intellectual growth.

Through this learning model, our students have not only witnessed the development of the Silk Road but have also enhanced their critical thinking and global citizenship.
