Language Teaching Policy

Objective: To enhance students' abilities and meet the needs of both students and society.

To lay a solid foundation of Cantonese and Mandarin

Since 2008, our school has participated in the " Scheme to Support Schools in Using Putonghua to Teach Chinese Language Subject ". In the first year of junior secondary, there are 10 Chinese language periods, all taught entirely in Mandarin. In the second and third years, there are two classes in each year level, with curriculum adjustments, laying a solid language foundation for students.

Small Class Teaching

English is used as the medium of instruction in teaching all junior form classes Mathematics, Integrated Science, Information Technology, Music, Visual Arts, Physical Education and Business Fundamentals (in Secondary 3). Starting from the academic year of 2025, Secondary 1 classes also learn the subject of Personal, Social and Humanities Education in English. As for the subject of English Language, a school-based curriculum has been designed to cater to the needs of our students, each form of which is divided into five learning groups according to their ability. It is hoped that diverse learning needs can be catered to, and students' English proficiency will be improved.

Facilitate the students to learn English

There is an English reading lesson in each junior form to promote a reading culture. In senior secondary, there are English speaking classes in each year level, with each class divided into groups in a 1:10 ratio to increase students' opportunities to listen to and speak English. There are also NET classes for junior forms each year, also in small groups of 1:10, to encourage students to listen and speak more.

Intensive training to improve language skills

The number of English periods in each of the senior forms has been increased to extend English learning time, and group teaching is adopted according to students' abilities to better cater to diverse learning needs. Some subjects use English as the medium of instruction, increasing students' opportunities to use the language.

Tutorials to prepare the students for the public exams

After-school tutorials are provided for public examination classes in a group of 1:4, giving individual guidance according to students' abilities to help them better prepare for the public examinations.

Morning practice to promote self-Learning

There is a "Morning English Listening and Reading Program" in senior forms, where teachers have designed a series of appropriate self-learning software to encourage students to learn English in the multimedia learning room every day. All students participate in the Chinese University's online "Extensive English Reading Program". At the same time, teachers have also placed a variety of English self-learning materials on the school intranet to enhance students' English self-learning ability.

Choose the medium of instruction in accordance with the students’ abilities

When students enter senior forms, they can choose to use English or their mother tongue as the medium of instruction according to their abilities. The school will adopt different teaching languages according to the nature of different subjects to meet the needs and abilities of students, and to better bring out the strengths of each student.
